Research Associate

Position Overview: 

Friends of Cancer Research (Friends) is seeking a qualified candidate to join its Science Team as a Research Associate. The Research Associate will play a key role in furthering the organization’s mission of expediting the development of life-saving therapies for cancer patients through the advancement of science and regulatory policy.

Through close coordination with the Vice President, Science Policy, the Research Associate will assist in the development and implementation of research initiatives designed to encourage dialogue between scientists, advocates, and policy makers and aimed at decreasing barriers to cancer research and improving patient access to care.


The Research Associate will be responsible for executing the following job duties:


  • Conduct secondary research on FDA regulatory policy, studying longitudinal trends in drug approvals in order to assess the impact of FDA approval mechanisms on drug development programs.
  • Monitor, track, and analyze key scientific issues relevant to the organization’s mission of advancing cancer research for the benefit of cancer patients.
  • Support the Science Team’s working group and pilot project initiatives at all stages including project proposal development, working group management, work product formulation, and result dissemination.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as call scheduling and working group contact database management as needed.

At minimum, a candidate for the position of Research Associate should possess the following qualifications and attributes:


  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably with a focus on biological sciences or cancer/health policy
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  • High-quality written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to analyze information from health policy documents, regulatory guidance, and published scientific literature
  • Ability to think critically and synthesize information from science and policy documents and determine relevance and implications to scientific research and patient care


  • Motivated to seek out projects and tasks without being prompted or explicitly directed to do so
  • Capable of working under pressure and responding quickly to shifts in priorities
  • Well-organized and capable of balancing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Interested in the delivery of health care interventions and advancement of scientific research and policy for the benefit of patients
  • Possesses an understanding of the intersectional relationship between scientific research, legislation, and regulation and the impact on drug development and patient care
  • Approaches projects with curiosity and views assignments as opportunities to learn
