On September 20th, 2016, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee convened a hearing to discuss laboratory testing the in the era of precision medicine. The hearing took place amid an ongoing debate over the proper regulatory framework for laboratory-developed tests (LDTs). LDTs are in vitro diagnostic tests (IVDs) that are made and performed within a single laboratory. They differ from IVDs that are manufactured and sold as diagnostic kits, which are performed at many labs that did not originate the test.

On May 24, 2016, Friends cohosted the 2016 Immuno-Oncology Clinical and Patient Roundtable with the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine. This roundtable consisted of experts in the field of immuno-oncology and regulatory health policy, as well as patients. Panelists came from diverse backgrounds, including academia, industry, and government. The event aimed to educate and inform major stakeholders in cancer research about the most recent scientific breakthroughs and the challenges faced by researchers and policymakers in the field of immuno-oncology.

Komen for the Cure. Each year, this conference brings together a diverse group of experts in cancer drug development from academic and clinical research centers, federal health and regulatory agencies, patient advocacy organizations and the private sector to develop practical, consensus-driven solutions to critical challenges in cancer drug development.

Developing a potential therapy from the initial discovery stage through clinical testing and regulatory review is a complicated, expensive, and often inefficient process that can take up to 15 years. The current system is unsustainable. Included among the many challenges of drug development are the difficulties in recruiting cancer patients to clinical trials, the extensive bureaucratic processes required to initiate any clinical trial, and lengthy regulatory review. Modernizing this process with innovative approaches and new clinical trial designs is of high importance.

Building on a previous discussion at the 2010 Conference on Clinical Cancer Research, Friends partnered with MD Anderson Cancer Center to host a clinical cancer research roundtable titled "Developing Strategies for Reducing Cancer Treatment-Related Toxicities and Symptoms" on March 25th in Houston, TX. The conference brought together stakeholders in cancer research, drug development, regulation, and advocacy to identify the challenges that have prevented progress in reducing treatment-related symptom burden and to develop strategic steps to meet these challenges.
