the Friends of Cancer Research Newsletter. For more information and mid-month breaking news, please monitor the Friend's website at www.focr.org.
EVENT REMINDER This coming Tuesday, we will host our second town hall of the year entitled "From Bench to Bedside: Defeating cancer through prevention and early detection." This event will explore the opportunities and barriers for translating recent discoveries in the human genome into cutting edge medical advancements for the prevention and early detection of cancer. When: Tuesday, July 13, 2004 Carolyn "Bo" Aldige, President of the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation and a Friends’ Board Member, will provide introductory remarks and them panel discussion will be moderated by Susan Dentzer, Health Correspondent for the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. The panelists include: Anna Barker, Ph.D., Deputy Director, NCI Following the event, Clifton Leaf will take audience questions about his recent cover story in Fortune Magazine entitled "Why We're Losing the War on Cancer (and How to Win it)." If you have not
yet RSVP'd, please do as soon as possible to
agarber@focr.org. House and Senate appropriators may soon markup of their Labor, HHS, Education, and Related Agencies bill for FY 2005. It remains to be seen whether the funding levels will be the same or perhaps less than the $28.8 billion proposed in the President’s budget. However, neither committee seems likely to go beyond that amount. The administration’s request would reflect a 2.7% increase of $763 million. Toward the end of June, the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) warned members that potential changes in the House NIH funding would undercut even a 2.7% increase. If that occurred, FASEB warned, the NIH would be forced to either reduce the level of new grant recipients or the grant funding level would have to be cut below levels necessary to offset inflation. Endorsement of CA Stem Cell Initiative Friends of Cancer Research has officially endorsed a ballot initiative in California that would provide funding for stem cell research. The California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative seeks to realize the promise of pluripotent cell research by supporting all stages of its application to chronic human diseases and injuries. If approved by voters in November, the initiative would supply universities and the biotechnology industry with as much as $295 million a year for 10 years, raised through the sale of state bonds. Friends’ welcomes new staff member and summer intern. Alyse Garber joined our staff in June as a Communications and Development Associate. She recently graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Media Studies, an inter-disciplinary major in the school of arts and sciences. Ashley Springer also joined us in June as a Summer Intern. She is an MBA student at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.
