Goal and Objectives
Our goal is to mobilize public support for cancer research so
that we can accelerate the nation’s progress toward the
prevention and cure of cancer. Toward that end, our objectives
are to:
- Demonstrate the benefits of cancer research;
- Illustrate the need for answers to this terrible disease;
and
- Explain the investment needed for the task ahead.

Legislative Update
While Friends continues to celebrate the hardfought effort
to complete the 5-year doubling of the budget of the National
Institutes of Health, we must continue to educate key Members
of Congress and the Bush Administration about the importance
of sustaining a significant funding level to continue
important cancer research priorities. During the remaining
weeks and month of this Congress, FOCR will undertake an
aggressive public education campaign. This is to make it clear
to the Congress and the Administration that a sustained effort
beyond the doubling is critically important to sustain the
important progress that we have made in the fight against
cancer.

September Outlook
As part of our public education campaign Friends is
in negotiations with key Leadership and Appropriations
Committee members to conduct educational "Town Hall" meeting
at NCI designated Cancer Centers around the country. These
town halls are designed to facilitate a dialogue among
policymakers, National Cancer Institute leaders, and members
of the cancer research community about the progress that have
been made. The forums will have an ongoing dialogue about the
work that still needs to be done to eradicate cancer.

When Congress Resumes
There are quite a few major issues still pending as Congress
comes back in session after the August recess. A top priority is
to finish the various appropriations bills, which will include
Labor-H.H.S. In the wake of the Enron scandal, Congress may hold
a number of hearings to investigate corporate scandal, and
deliberate legislation concerning pension security and 401k
reform. Both the House and Senate will debate a prescription
drug program for senior citizens. Other top items on Congress'
agenda will be the War on Terrorism, including resolving
differences between the White House and Democrats on the
creation of a Homeland Security Department and whether to pursue
a war with Iraq. |
