Goal and Objectives

Our goal is to mobilize public support for cancer research so that we can accelerate the nation’s progress toward the prevention and cure of cancer. Toward that end, our objectives are to:

  • Demonstrate the benefits of cancer research;
  • Illustrate the need for answers to this terrible disease; and
  • Explain the investment needed for the task ahead.

A. TIME Magazine

TIME Magazine’s April 22 cover story, "How Medical Testing Has Turned Millions of Us Into Human Guinea Pigs" provided Friends of Cancer Research an opportunity to highlight the need for, and benefits of, clinical trials. On behalf of Friends, General Norman Schwarzkopf sent TIME a Letter to the Editor, the text of which follows, which will printed in the May 13 edition.

The main article, "At Your Own Risk…Some patients join clinical trials out of desperation, others to help medicine advance. Who is to blame if they get sick – or even die?" used a vaccine trial for malignant melanoma that went seriously wrong to launch a discussion about the clinical trial system and what steps might be taken to improve it.

"As a survivor of prostate cancer, I owe my life to those on the frontline of medical research, the courageous clinical trial participants. But to those researchers who use shoddy procedures and put their patients at risk, as well as those institutions whose lax oversight undermines public trust, shame! Without well-designed research efforts, fully informed patients and strict oversight, we will not be able to find and develop the medicines and therapies we desperately need to treat debilitating diseases. I am all for clinical trials done the right way."

B. ASCO Convention

Friends is looking forward to participating in the 2002 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists. We are excited to announce that Ellen Sigal, Ph.D. and General Norman H. Schwarzkopf have been chosen by ASCO to receive Special Recognition Awards for their outstanding work in mobilizing public support for cancer research. Ellen and the General will be presented with their awards during the Opening Ceremonies of the meeting on Saturday, May 18th at 9:15am at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando, FL.

C. Prospects for the NIH Budget

Friends learned this week from senior Capitol Hill sources that the prospects for Congress responding favorably to the President’s strong FY03 budget request for the National Institutes of Health are very good. While substantial pressure is being put on appropriators from several fronts related to the war on terrorism and the government has returned to deficit spending, speculation is that the Congress will stay on track with regard to the doubling effort. Friends will continue its strategic education campaign with key policymakers and opinion leaders to ensure that Congress fulfills the bipartisan agreement.
