Town Hall @ Yale Unversity

Town Hall @ Ohio State
Over 300 researchers, patients, health care professionals, and other cancer research advocates piled into the state-of-the-art Biomedical Research Tower at Ohio State University on October 1 to hear discussion on the future of cancer research. Educational Day on Capitol Hill
On
May 9, 2006, Friends joined the American Association
for Cancer Research (AACR), the Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI)
to host the third-annual educational
hill day. Cancer researchers, scientists, and patients gathered in
Washington, D.C. to educate members of Congress and their staffs about the
need to seize current scientific opportunities to maximize progress against
cancer. This years theme coincided with AACRs Centennial
Anniversary, celebrating 100 years of progress. For more details,

Drug Safety Briefing:
"Drug Safety: Defining Safe"

March 21st,
Friends hosted an educational congressional
briefing on Capitol Hill entitled Drug Safety: Defining Safe. Featuring
introductory remarks from Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO), the briefing
included expert panelists Dr. Robert Young, President of Fox Chase
Cancer Center; Dr. Mark McClellan, Former Administrator of CMS & Former
Commissioner of FDA; Dr. Janet Woodcock, Deputy Commissioner and Chief
Medical Officer of FDA; and patient advocate Dan Perry, Executive Director
of The Alliance for Aging. Susan Dentzer of The NewsHour with Jim
Lehrer on PBS

15, 2006, at The Four Seasons Hotel in Washington D.C. Honorees

(R-OH); Lucy Fisher & Douglas Wick, Red Wagon Entertainment Award-winning
movie producers whose credits include Gladiator, Stuart Little, Working
Girl, and Memoirs of A Geisha; Janet & Jerry Zucker, Zucker Productions
Award-winning producers and director whose credits include Ghost, My Best
Friends Wedding, Airplane, Rat Race, The Naked Gun, and
First Knight.

Avenue Key to the Cure Shopping Weekend Benefits Friends of
Cancer Research
Saks Fifth Avenue's KEY TO THE
CURE Charity Shopping Weekend was held this past weekend, October 12-October 15 at the Tysons Galleria Saks store. A percentage of proceeds from
purchases will go directly towards our efforts to continue
our mission in raising awareness and providing education on the
importance of cancer research. The shopping weekend
festivities included trunk shows, fashion presentations, and a
raffle with wonderful prizes like a $500 Saks gift certificate,
a night at the Park Hyatt, etc. See our October Newsletter for a

"The AACR Awards Program recognizes the finest and most promising investigators in all fields of cancer research," said AACR Chief Executive Officer Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.). "During our Annual Meeting, AACR is pleased to honor the dedication and work of such influential researchers and advocates who continue to shape the future of cancer research."
Friends' chair, Dr. Ellen V. Sigal, has been named the 2nd recipient of the annual AACR Margaret Foti Award for Leadership and Extraordinary Achievements in Cancer Research. See her acceptance speech here...
