In 2006, Friends of Cancer Research, a cancer
non-profit organization, established a working group composed of
advocacy groups and members from their Scientific Advisory Board and
beyond to explore scientific, medical, and policy issues relevant to
assessing the benefits and risks of prescription drugs. The working
group focused on examining how upcoming legislation and proposed
changes to current policy will impact patients from a regulatory
perspective.
Chaired by Dr. Robert C. Young, President of Fox Chase
Cancer Center, the working group formulated recommendations resulting
in the report "Drug Safety & Drug Efficacy: Two Sides of The Same
Coin." The recommendations aim to strengthen the FDA through
increased resources, personnel, training, enhanced product
surveillance and data collection, and to promote advancement of the
agency’s scientific foundation.
While the working group was originally convened by
Friends of Cancer Research, the report comes from the broader
biomedical community. A full list of authors is available on the
Authors page of this extended website for
the report.
Additionally, over 20 prominent health oriented
organizations have signed-on to the report supporting the
recommendations. A list of sign-ons is available on the
Sign-ons page.
