Position Title: Senior Manager for
Corporate Development
Friends of Cancer Research, a non-profit
organization in the Washington D.C. area (Arlington, VA), seeks an
energetic, motivated, well-organized individual with a background in
development. This position is responsible for securing funds for Friends
activities and to build professional relationships with corporations and
foundations that best compliments Friends policy initiatives.
Key job responsibilities include:

Research and identify prospective corporate
contributors that support health and cancer related programs whose
philanthropic interests are consistent with Friends programs and
activities.

A targeted strategy to successfully secure
sponsorships from corporations and foundations
-
Conceive new and expand existing major
fundraising initiatives that are part of a comprehensive development
program
-
Craft compelling verbal and written
proposals
-
Manage and execute approved fundraising
strategies that provide annual support as well as support for specific
projects, meetings and other activities
-
Develop project budget
-
Establish and maintain professional
relationships
-
Manage donor database
-
Assist with meeting preparation and
follow-up with existing potential donors and financial partners
Qualifications:
-
Bachelors Degree
-
A minimum of 5 years development experience
in health sector with non-profits and corporations including donor
research and database management
-
Strong understanding of non-profits
-
Strong writing skills
-
Self-motivated with the ability to thrive
under pressure and on deadline
-
Team-player also capable of working
independently and with minimal oversight
-
Excellent time-management and prioritization
skills
-
Strong proficiency with Access, Microsoft
Office and the internet

(FOCR) is a non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. that raises
awareness and provides public education on cancer research in order to
accelerate the nation’s progress toward prevention and treatment of all
cancers.
Founded in 1996 to mark the 25th Anniversary of the
National Cancer Act, Friends is a blend of strong voices within the
cancer community. Friends' engages and collaborates with leaders
of cancer centers, patient advocacy groups, oncology professional
societies, public and private corporations, and representatives from the
media and entertainment industry on our programs.
FOCR Chair,
Dr. Ellen Sigal, and President, Marlene Malek, were selected as 2005
Washingtonians of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine for
their contribution to the fight against cancer and their dedication to
Friends of Cancer Research.

Internships
We are now accepting applications for our
2006 Internship Program in
the following categories:

Cancer Research Policy
One out of every two men and one out of every three women will face
some form of cancer in their lifetime.
Cancer
policy plays an important role in confronting these alarming
statistics; a policy environment conducive to progress is essential to
translating research into cures. As a policy intern at FOCR you
will gain substantive first-hand experience and knowledge of an
"inside the beltway" 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.

As a Cancer Research Policy intern, you will:
- Research, compose, and create policy briefs and
reports
- Track current cancer related legislation and floor
activity
- Attend advocacy, industry, and congressional meetings
-
Interact with
congressmen, government officials, industry executives, and
the cancer advocacy community
-
Write policy related articles FOCR Publications
- Contribute to planning of FOCR events and programs

Non-Profit Management
The Non-Profit Management Internship Program is designed for a
graduate level student with experience in
business administration and an interest in non profits active in the
health care policy arena. This intern would work directly with
the director and board chair to help develop
ideas
for improving internal operations and management.
As a Management intern you
will:
-
Meet with board members, directors of other non-profit
organizations, legal counsel, and industry executives
- Design and manage projects related
to organizational administration and/or financing
- Gain understanding of the different financial scenarios that
come with being a 501(c)(3) non-profit and how they differ from
the corporate model
- Organize and implement database management
- Develop plans and set goals for improving
corporate management and infrastructure |
Our Internship Program is designed to
accommodate both quarter and semester schedules, and
applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.
The suggested time commitment is approximately 20 hours per week
for 3 months but is flexible to accommodate course credit. It is recommended that
you submit your application at least three months in advance of your
desired start date.

college undergraduates (sophomore, junior, or senior) and graduate
students to learn how a growing non-profit organization functions
and gain valuable experience in aspects of policy or management
operations. Strong research, analytical, and computer skills are
