Position Title: Communications Director

Friends of Cancer Research, a cancer non-profit organization in the Washington D.C. area (Arlington, VA), seeks an energetic, motivated individual with a background in health communications. This position is responsible for managing all internal and external communication efforts including monthly e-newsletter, website, public relations, and marketing, as well as some event planning and development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Public Relations/Communications

  • Generate relationships with health care journalists
  • Generate ideas for and write press releases, op-eds and other written communications that advance federal policy goals
  • Help craft news releases, letters to the editors and opinion pieces
  • Generate monthly newsletter and annual report.

Marketing

  • Conceive, design, write, edit, and oversee production of collaterals for programs and events
  • Contract and coordinate with vendors (printers, etc.)

Online

  • Write, design, edit, and execute delivery of e-communications, including monthly newsletter
  • Collect and synthesize tracking statistics for effectiveness of electronic communication messages
  • Develop content and maintain website

Event Planning

  • Design and oversee production of special event invitations and materials
  • Assist with special event logistics
  • Manage photography, including hiring professionals, of people and events for press releases and publications

Development

  • Help to maintain donor database
  • Assist in the writing and editing of grant proposals, reports, and donor outreach materials

General

  • Provide communications support to fellow staff on their related collateral
  • Develop and maintain protocols for information flow relating to communication issues
  • Ensure a total unified and consistent organizational image by reviewing all printed communication that represents FOCR, including stationery, logos, fact sheets, event programs, newsletter, invitations, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors Degree
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a non-profit communications department, a public relations agency, or related professional experience
  • Strong writing skills, across different areas (e.g. op-eds, speech-writing, newsletter)
  • Avid consumer of print, broadcast and internet media
  • Proficiency with MS Office, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access, FrontPage, and Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign
  • Basic proficiency in web technologies (HTML; XML, Flash, a plus)
  • Comfortable with computer technologies, experience working with databases, and an aptitude for learning new technology
  • Experience working with the media
  • Self-motivated with the ability to thrive under pressure and on deadline
  • Team-player also capable of working independently
