Updated 1/27/12 In February 2012, the President is expected to release his FY13 budget request and Congress will begin to consider funding levels for federal agencies shortly thereafter. FY13 is likely to be a difficult funding year with across the board cuts affecting nearly every agency including possible cuts to the FDA, NCI, NIH, and other HHS programs. Friends of Cancer Research continues to support robust funding for biomedical research and programs that aim to get cancer patients therapies and treatments in the safest and quickest way possible. FY12 Appropriations Recap: On December 17, 2011, President Obama signed into law HR 2055, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2012. The bill increased the budget for the National Institutes of Health by approximately $250 million after a mandatory .2% cut for all non-defense spending included in the bill. In November 2011, the House and Senate passed and the President signed into law HR 2112, the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2012. HR 2112 included a $50 million budget increase for the FDA over FY11 levels. Below is a letter sent to the conference committee by Friends of Cancer research urging the conferees to approve of the $50 million budget increase.
